As a boy, Bruce first heard the reminiscences of the aged veterans who had fought in the Civil War. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister, who accepted a teaching position in Benzonia Academy and later became the academy's headmaster. Oliver Jensen, who succeeded him as editor of American Heritage magazine, wrote: "There is a near-magic power of imagination in Catton's work that seemed to project him physically into the battlefields, along the dusty roads and to the campfires of another age."īruce Catton was born in Petoskey, Michigan, but spent most of his boyhood in Benzonia. In the long line of Civil War historians, Catton is arguably the most prolific and popular of all, with Shelby Foote his only conceivable rival. His works, although well-researched, were generally not presented in a rigorous academic style, supported by footnotes. Catton was known as a narrative historian who specialized in popular histories that emphasized the colorful characters and vignettes of history, in addition to the simple dates, facts, and analysis.

After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was an Irish author, playwright and poet. On every page of this collection the gifted literary stylist admirably demonstrates not only that the characteristics of art are "distinction, charm, beauty, and imaginative power," but also that criticism itself can be raised to an art form possessing these very qualities. A leading spokesman for the English Aesthetic movement, Wilde promoted "art for art’s sake" against critics who argued that art must serve a moral purpose. Originally published in 1891 when Wilde was at the height of his form, these brilliant essays on art, literature, criticism, and society display the flamboyant poseur’s famous wit and wide learning. Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Oscar Wilde, ‘Intentions’. The scan quality is excellent while most pages are yellowed to some extent they are clean and clear. And there are a lot more intense panels just like that throughout. Just drink in that last panel above of Granny Goodness it’s the inks and lack of colour that do it for me. It’s a crazy comic filled with ridiculous premises, over the top characters and sheer insanity as only Kirby could draw. This is by far the best available production of Kirby’s Big Barda, and the main reason I bought this edition. The fold out shown above features a double page spread on the other side, unlike earlier fold outs like Kubert’s Tarzan. Then a gallery section featuring covers to issues 5,11 and 12, plus issue 11 pages 1-3 and 5, issue 15 page 12 and two other Kirby Mister Miracle illustrations. This a great run of comics: two consecutive issues followed by five consecutive issues: 2-3 and 5-9. The wackiest character to get a Fourth World series, Jack Kirby Mister Miracle Artist’s Edition gives us the very best of Scott Free and Big Barda. Shogun has no aim to be an intellectual masterpiece, but it deserves respect, and it is often pure joy to read (even though some passages might come across as overwritten or too sappy – especially the love story between Mariko and Blackthorne). Especially the three main characters (Blackthorne, Toranaga and Mariko). The characters and the story are fascinating and well developed, at the right pace and with the right justifications. Nevertheless, Clavell remains a master storyteller. Though I knew what to expect, I still hoped the book would have a better ending than i remembered. That last page disappointed me as much as thirty years ago. One page to finish all, as though Clavell was in a hurry or had ran out of imagination. It is unlikely, in fact, many will not feel slightly cheated by last-page wrap up. It is still very long, but it is definitely worth it, but for its ending. To my surprise, 30 years later, the book is still as entertaining and beautiful as I remembered. I was curious to see what I would think of it, as adult. Last spring, I decided to re-read Shogun by James Clavell. But just three years later, she was dead, beheaded by the very man who’d defied the Catholic Church and centuries of precedent to make her his wife. While Kafka never wrote directly about his father in his works, the psychology of his novels and arbitrary punitive notions that set the tone as so bitterly hopeless are largely drawn from the abuse young Kafka suffered.
